The rose or head points upward to allow the fine lofty spray to impact under it's own gentle weight, like true rain, rather than the pressure of the water in the watering can (or hose in this case)-- an important attribute for sensitive plants that could be damaged by the pelting force of water. In fact, we know of no other watering lance that is gentle enough to be use on the newest seedlings.
